Bad Girl With a Heart of Gold — a performance-lecture by Anuj Vaidya
Vaidya’s Bad Girl With a Heart of Gold finds the artist in conversation with his own film of the same name. The performance/lecture explores the genealogy of the vamp in Bollywood – from her origins in the Jewish stars of early Indian cinema and culminating in the iconic roles of the anglo-Indian actress Helen in the 60s and 70s. Vaidya’s experimental narrative weaves many of Helen’s signature roles together to pose the question: Can the vamp escape her perpetual death by Bollywood? We’ll find out during the next dance number!

Director Moreh persuaded all six living former heads of Shin Bet (Israel’s secret service) to speak publicly for the first time about their experiences. Responding to Moreh’s tough questions with remarkable candor, they offer both a gripping inside view of counterterrorist operations (against Jewish as well as Palestinian extremists) and a far-reaching critique of Israeli policies. The six men display vividly different, complex personalities but are unanimous in their belief in a two-state solution as the only possible way out of a situation in which, as one of them says, “We win every battle, but we lose the war.”

In this intense and disturbing story, menacing anti-hero Lee Kang-do (Lee Jung-jin) is a loan shark living an isolated and lonely existence who uses brutality to threaten and collect paybacks from desperate borrowers for his moneylender boss. Amir Gwirtzman – Israeli World and Jazz Festival
Amir Gwirtzman is a musician hailing from Tel Aviv, Israel known for his mastery of reed and woodwind instruments from around the globe. Amir began his solo project Inhale-Exhale, performing alone on a stage surrounded by more than twenty reed and woodwind instruments. These included the saxophone family, clarinets, Scottish Highland bagpipes, Egyptian argul, Middle Eastern ney, Armenian duduk, pan-Asian zorna, and flutes spanning the globe from Native American to Irish to Vietnamese cultures. Orchestrating these instruments together to make a multi-cultural musical tapestry, Amir creates a metaphor for our globalized world – bringing different cultures together to make an exciting, multi-layered whole.

Young people across India—and the world, from Nigeria to Trinidad to South Africa and China—sing the newest Bollywood songs and imitate the latest dance moves. Dancers are never credited in the films, 22unlike the actors, singers, and choreographers. The makers of Personality were drawn to this irony of Bollywood—its fabulous sets, large budgets, and lavish dances juxtaposed with the poorly paid and anonymous dancers. Personality is the first film to bring the struggle, art, and lives of these dancers to the forefront.
Rajesh, a talented and hard-working dancer, moves to Bombay from his rural village to dance in Bollywood films. Under the tutelage of Sanjay, his outspoken yet introspective guru, Rajesh embarks on the journey to achieve his dream. Over the course of a eyar, Rajesh and Sanjay encounter the changing climate of globalized Indian and recognize that the new face of Bollywood does not include them. Personality is shot in a cinema verité style. Motivated by the daily struggles of Rajesh and Sanjay, the verité style contrasts with the glitzy Bollywood blockbuster style.

Flutist, composer and arranger Hadar Noiberg has established herself as a major force in the Cuban, Jazz, and World music scenes. With a language that transcends her Middle Eastern roots, she fuses styles seamlessly, distinguishing herself as both innovative and highly skilled.
The first Israeli Jazz Festival in Chicago will highlight the full spectrum of the diverse jazz music scene in Israel. The artists reflect the international and multi-cultural diversity found throughout Israel. Such influences have inspired the music which ranges from Afro –Caribbean to Latin fusion, from Ethio-Jazz to Jewish Klezmer, and from Middle Eastern to smooth, straight-ahead Jazz.
