WEDNESDAY JANUARY 23
Chota Madre & Pachacamak Folk Dance
Chota Madre is a cultural movement on a mission to introduce the world to the Afro-Ecuadoran style of music known as Bomba (not to be confused with Puerto Rican Bomba) from the Chota Valley of Ecuador. This unique style of music was born out of the blending of African, European, and indigenous communities in Ecuador and named after the Afro-Ecuadoran percussion instrument of the same name.
Pachacamak Folk is proud to promote the beauty of the Bomba Afro Ecuadorian music and dance from the region of El Valle del Chota. The combination of African, Andean and Mestizo cultures has produced a very particular kind of dance and music known as Bomba. Pachacamak will perform the dance Bomba with the Chota Madre.

Chicago Afrobeat Project
Afrobeat cannot stand still. As the genre’s tempting sounds continue a resurgence across the globe, Chicago Afrobeat Project (CAbP) remains true to its original vision of breathing the intensity of Chicago’s rich music scene into the infectious sounds of afrobeat. Rather than become caricatures of the genre, CAbP slips a reverent nod to the tradition while delivering an energized originality different from any other band on the afrobeat scene today.

Vagabond Opera at Old Town School of Folk Music
The six-piece, Portland, Oregon-based music ensemble Vagabond Opera is described by the Washington Post as “a band of ceaseless charisma, boundless energy, impeccable musicianship and more than a little touch of both the naughty and exotic.”
Featuring four singers (two operatically trained) two cellos, saxophone, clarinet, accordion, double bass and drums, the Bohemian neo-cabaret gypsy Klezmer ensemble plays a combination of cabaret, burlesque, tango, Balkan beats, Klezmer, Arab music, Parisian hot jazz, and, yes, opera that’ll leave your head spinning. The ensemble sings in 15 languages and mixes their genre-defying original tunes with covers made famous by such artists as Jacques Brel, Tom Waits, Raymond Scott, and Edith Piaf – all performed with theatrics, flair and an old world mood.
