Afro-Peruvian musician and ambassador of the cajón, Juan Medrano Cotito
Juan Medrano Cotito is the internationally renowned Afro-Peruvian musician and ambassador of the cajón. During his time with Susana Baca’s group they won a Latin Grammy which propelled Afro-Peruvian music to the world music stage. His work with the Grammy nominated band Novalima, which mixes Afro-Peruvian music with electronic music, has broken new ground and raised awareness of Peruvian music in even wider circles. In Peru he has been awarded the Meritorious Figure of Peruvian Culture award by the Peruvian government and he has been cultivating communities of Afro-Peruvian music at home and abroad.

The irresistible acoustic groove of Golpe Tierra, which translates to “beating the earth,” bases its sound on just that philosophy. When the group comes together to beat the earth with their feet and hands they are truly celebrating the act of community.
