12/13 | One Root, Many Branches by MUNTU DANCE THEATRE

My new ballet “Manifest” will premiere on Muntu Dance Chicago this weekend in their fall concert “One Root, Many Branches” – I use Anancy character as a way to collapse time and choreographically travel through traditional expressions found in Jonkonnu masquerades, Kumina, Gerreh, Dinki Mini, Ettu, Nago, Bruckins, Tambu and Zella, all the way to contemporized potentials of codified Jamaican dancehall movement. ~ choreographer Christopher Walker

The production ‘One Root, Many Branches,’ is an evening of work that explores the connectedness of the dance and music of people of African descent in Jamaica, Brazil and the United States from the perspective of their common ancestral root. The performance includes the world premiere by internationally renowned choreographer Christopher Walker.
