An accomplished singer, pianist, composer, actress, Afro Cuban dancer, and educator, Melvis Santa was born and raised in the eclectic town of Centro Habana, Cuba, Melvis came to performance through her early years involvement with music, theater, dance and many multicultural traditions. At age 7 she began studying classical piano.
She made a splash in the Cuban musical scene at 14 years old when she founded the all-female collective vocal group Sexto Sentido, deemed by jazz great Chucho Valdés as “the best Cuban vocal quartet of the past 30 years” in 2007. The following years she joined Interactivo, a seminal fusion band, touring across the globe and collaborating with Cuba music`s elite. Her musical influences evoke greats like Merceditas Valdés, Celia Cruz, Moraima Secada, and composer Marta Valdés. Also, jazz legends such as Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Abbey Lincoln, Shirley Horn and Diane Reeves. The New York Times defines her style as possessing 70`s soul underpinnings, yet belonging to the Afro Cuban musical traditions.
Joining Mevis and Brenda will be three of Chicago’s finest jazz musicians: Brett Benteler on bass, Mike Alemana on guitar and Orbert Davis on trumpet.
