Annual Concert for Peace: Harmony – East Meets West
Fulcrum Point New Music Project, the city’s leader in new art music and inventive collaborations, commemorates the September 11th tragedy with the Annual Concert for Peace, this year subtitled Harmony – East Meets West, featuring globally inspired music and guest performers ranging from Native American to Chinese, Indian-American and Israeli.
The Fulcrum Point ensemble, led by its Founder and Artistic Director Stephen Burns, will be joined by special guest artists, Native American flutist R. Carlos Nakai, local acoustic band Zamin led by vocalist Zeshan Bagewadi, trained in Indian vocal techniques, and flutist Mary Stolper.
Repertory selections performed by Fulcrum Point include Israeli composer Shulamit Ran’s “East Wind” for solo flute, David Dzubay’s “Wintu Dream Song,” based on a Native American song from the Wintu tribe, and Chinese composer Zhou Long’s otherworldly “Harmony,” blending traditional Chinese and contemporary Western music styles.

Horizonte (compilation of music and dance of Chile)
is a folkloric group whose principal mission is to promote Chilean culture. This event is a partnership with the Chilean Consulate as a celebration of Chilean Independence. The presentations of the folkloric group “Horizonte” are characterized by spectacles full of color and a compilation of music and dance of Chile, which results in an entertaining presentation, which encourages the understanding of Chile’s expansive culture and spotlights the more representative regions of Chile.

Chilean Dance Workshop with Conjunto Folklórico Horizonte
Join members of Conjunto Folklórico Horizonte as they teach la cueca, the national dance of Chile. The visiting masters will give a brief history of the dance and then demonstrate four styles of cueca (nortina, chilota, central, and brava) to live music in regional dress. There will also be a description and demonstration of the instruments of each region.
